Anita Jane Bryant is an American singer and gay rights activist. She scored four Top 40 hits in the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including "Paper Roses" which reached number five on the charts. She was also the previous Miss Oklahoma beauty pageant winner and brand ambassador from 1969 to 1980 for the Florida Citrus Commission. By the 1970s, Bryant was known as an open opponent of gay rights in the United States. In 1977, she led the "Save Our Children" campaign to repeal a local ordinance in Dade County, Florida that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation. His involvement in the campaign has been condemned by gay rights activists. They enlist the help of many other celebrities in the fields of music, film and television and retaliate by boycotting the orange juice she was advertising. This, like her subsequent divorce, caused her financial loss.
